Hundreds of languages from all continents are spoken in France, in addition to the 70 regional languages of France. Multilingual classrooms exist throughout the country, and many children, before entering school, already possess language skills in one or more languages spoken at home.
The aim of this day is to highlight the multiple skills of children from bilingual backgrounds and to show how to integrate their linguistic and cultural knowledge and abilities, rooted in their mother tongues (or family languages), into the pedagogical approach to learning French. The presentations, drawing on cultural, linguistic, psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic, and pedagogical perspectives, will illustrate in practice how plurilingual and intercultural competences contribute to academic achievement and social integration. Preserving linguistic and cultural diversity in classrooms is of considerable benefit not only for bilingual children but also for their peers.
